Release details for iOS 16, the next major iPhone software update, have been released by Apple. All iPhones, including current and older models, will benefit from the new update’s abundance of enhancements. Everything you need to know is listed here.
iOS 16 was initially revealed in June 2022 at WWDC, alongside the M2 Chip and the new MacBook series. In July, we made available to the public a beta version of the product, and on September 7th, we published the final, stable version.
The new iPhone 14 series, for which pre-orders begin on September 9, will begin shipping on September 16, coinciding neatly with the impending iOS update. Both the iPhone 14 Plus and the iPad 16 have been held back due to delays.
When is the Apple iOS 16 Release Date?
At the “Far Out” event, where the iPhone 14 series was introduced, Apple said that all iPhones would receive iOS 16 on September 12, 2022.
The official release of iOS 16 isn’t until next week, but the final beta is available today, so you can get a head start if you can’t wait. Since this is the final build before release, you should expect it to be quite bug-free.
What time does the Apple iOS 16 Update drop?
Apple has never revealed a specific time for the release of a significant update. With the help of historical patterns, though, we can estimate when Apple will release iOS 16.
On September 12 at 10 AM PT/1 PM ET, Apple is expected to release iOS 16. Nothing is set in stone at this time, and the schedule is subject to change.
If there are any last-minute adjustments, we’ll be sure to let you know. Previously, iOS 15, iOS 13, iOS 12, and iOS 11 all landed simultaneously, while iOS 14 dropped a bit late, at 1 PM PT/ 4 PM ET.
Apple iOS 16 Compatibility: Which iPhones will get the update?
According to Apple, all iPhones released within the last five years will receive the iOS 16 update. If you own an iPhone 8 or later, you can update to the newest version without any problems. On Monday, September 18, the following iPhones will receive the iOS 16 update:
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone X
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone XR
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 Pro
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 Mini
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 13
- iPhone 13 Mini
- iPhone 13 Pro
- iPhone 13 Pro Max
- iPhone SE (2nd Gen and Later)
iOS 16 will also come preinstalled on the Apple iPhone 14, 14 Pro, and 14 Max. When it finally hits shelves on October 7, 2022, the iPhone 14 Plus will be running the most recent version of iOS.
However, at present point iOS 16 won’t be available in its entirety for older devices. Apple has stated that certain features of iOS 16 will only be available on brand-new smartphones. For instance, iPhone 11 and up is required for the Live Captions accessibility function.
Also, the LiDAR scanner’s Door Detection and People Detection features will only work with iPhones model year 12 and up. If you compare this to the revision from last year, you’ll see a significant difference.
When does the iPadOS 16 come out?
Whenever Apple releases a new version of iOS, they also release an updated iPad operating system. However, on Monday, September 12, 2022, things will be different, as iPadOS 16 will not be released alongside iOS 16. The release date is yet TBD.
Apple has announced that the new version of iPadOS, 16.1, will be released this Fall, following the release of iOS. We can ship iPad OS whenever it’s ready. iPadOS version 16.1 will be released as a free software update this fall, following the release of iOS.
The iPadOS 16 (or 16.1) will be available with the following iPads:
- iPad Mini (5th Gen and later)
- iPad (5th Gen and later)
- iPad Air (3rd Gen and later)
- iPad Pro (All models)
For the time being, though, let’s zero in on iOS 16, with its plethora of new features and improvements—most notably its adaptable lock screen, battery % indicator, and a slew of other customization possibilities.
