The time spent without Overwatch today is almost to an end. Overwatch 2 will be released on October 4 for free and will replace the original game with a new design and a controversial battle pass.
Reworked heroes, new maps, and a new mode are just a few of the ways in which the game’s team-based tactics have been altered from the original, though we’re still not entirely persuaded that these changes are for the better. Everything is free, however, the $40 Watchpoint Pack adds some cosmetic items, 2,000 Overwatch Coins (its new premium currency), and the season one premium battle pass, which includes the new support hero Kiriko (opens in new tab). Perhaps the most divisive aspect of Overwatch 2 is the way heroes are unlocked (opens in a new tab).
Since the PvE component of Overwatch 2 won’t be released until 2020, the game isn’t nearly what was promised when it was launched in 2019. Blizzard has promised a whole skill tree system and significantly different powers than those you receive in PvP, but such features will have to wait for now.
However, three new heroes—Sojourn (damage), Junker Queen (tank), and Kiriko—have been added to the player-versus-player mode (support). The Mythic Cyber Demon Genji skin, for example, allows you to change the color of his eyes and the shape of his ears and is just one example of the many new cosmetics available in the battle pass and the in-game store. Every nine weeks, Blizzard intends to release new seasons (along with themed battle passes) (opens in new tab). Each season will alternate between introducing a new area and a new character, with the second season introducing a new tank hero.

So, what exactly transpired during the Overwatch 1 launch?
Before the 2016 release of the original game, Blizzard allowed stores to offer physical copies to customers one day beforehand. They needed this extra time to get the servers ready for the big launch.
There is no such tactic this time around because the game is available digitally only and is free of charge.
In honor of Overwatch 2’s release, there will be two Twitch drops where you can obtain the Kiriko skin.
The official Blizzard website has more details on how to obtain Kiriko, one of the game’s many legendary skins, as well as a Razor Sharp spray for Kiriko and a Donut Weapon Charm.
Overwatch 2 will be available at that moment on PC, PS4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and the Nintendo Switch worldwide.
The 50GB game can be preloaded before release. When using the Battle.net launcher on a PC, all players need to do to access the pre-release material for Overwatch is click the “pre-release content download” button just below the “play” button.

If you logged in to Overwatch before the end of season two, you received a Founder’s Pack that granted instant access to Sojourn, Junker Queen, and Kiriko because you owned Overwatch. Anyone who logs in to Overwatch during the first season, even if they don’t purchase Overwatch 1, will receive Sojourn and Junker Queen for no cost. Additionally, they will need to play roughly 100 games to unlock the whole cast of heroes from the original game (opens in new tab).
To use the game’s new SMS verification system, players will need a phone number associated with their Battle.net account, much like they did in the original Overwatch. How to enable SMS Protection and merge your Overwatch accounts into one to facilitate cross-progression is covered in this Blizzard blog post(opens in a new tab). Prepaid phone users like Cricket customers have complained that their numbers aren’t working, meaning they can’t access the game. Unfortunately for those who are having trouble making the math work, Blizzard has not yet announced whether or not this regulation will be changed.
If not, I hope you’ve been honing your mouse skills, because everyone else will be racing to secure the new heroes before you.
