When Is the Stranger Things Season 4 Release Date?

The COVID-19 shutdown undoubtedly impacted Netflix’s original plan. When the pandemic struck in January 2020, production on the new season was halted and didn’t resume until October 2020, filming had only been underway for a few months. Even though Stranger Things was originally scheduled to shoot for seven months, from January to August 2020, the post-production process is taking much longer than expected.

Stranger Things Season 4 Volume One will premiere on May 27, 2022, with Episodes 1 to 7, and Volume Two will premiere on July 1, 2022, with Episodes 8 and 9 respectively. According to the Duffer Brothers, each episode in the fourth season is long, but Episodes 7, 8, and 9 are nearly feature-length films.

The show has also already been renewed for a fifth and final season, as announced by Netflix.

When Is Stranger Things Season 4 Filming?

Season 4 of Stranger Things began filming in Lithuania in January 2020, a location that was completely new to the series. Hopper’s scenes in the Russian prison were chosen because Lithuania was used as a stand-in for Russia’s snowy landscape in the Season 4 teaser trailer. After a few weeks of filming in Atlanta, where the previous three seasons had taken place, the COVID-19 pandemic struck and production was halted. In September, production resumed in Georgia, but cast members have been flying in and out of Atlanta for filming blocks.

The back-and-forth nature of Stranger Things Season 4 filming was explained by cast member Gaten Matarazzo in March 2021:

Executive producer Shawn Levy elaborated on why Season 4 is taking so long to film:

When Is Stranger Things Season 4 Set?

While Stranger Things Season 4 isn’t set in stone yet, we can make an educated guess as to when it will take place. Seasons 1 and 2 took place in November 1983, October 1984, and the summer of 1985, respectively. Seasons of Stranger Things have never taken more than a year apart. In the new trailer, Eleven and Will are seen in California, which suggests that Season 4 takes place in the spring of 1986. Nonetheless, based on the footage we’ve seen of the Creel house, it’s also possible that we’ll see flashbacks to the 1950s of what happened there.

What Is the Stranger Things Season 4 Story?

A brief synopsis of the new season of Stranger Things was released in February of 2020 that confirmed that David Harbour’s Hopper would return and that the character wasn’t dead after all. At the end of Stranger Things 3, Hopper sacrificed himself in front of the enormous wormhole that the Russians had opened up beneath Hawkins, IN. We were taken to a Russian prison, where the guards were talking about “the American,” in a post-credits scene, however.

While in Kamchatka, Russia for Season 4 of Stranger Things, Hopper “will face dangers both human… and other.” Even in the post-credits scene of Stranger Things 3, we saw a Demogorgon in the Russians’ possession.

According to Harbour in an interview with Collider, the time spent by Hopper in the Russian prison changes the character in a way similar to Gandalf’s transformation in The Lord of the Rings.

They have also stated that Season 4 will explore a world outside of Hawkins, Indiana; this is evident in the trailer, which shows Byers fully immersed in California. The Hellfire Club – the Dungeons and Dragons club at Hawkins High – plays an important role in Season 4, so the hometown isn’t going anywhere in Season 4.

A psychiatric hospital and Robert Englund’s Victor Creel figure prominently in the season, based on the cast breakdown. Another trailer revealed that we’ll see more of Eleven’s childhood at the facility run by Martin Brenner, including the Rainbow Room.

It was revealed by Shawn Levy that Stranger Things 4’s ambitious story takes place in three different locations — Hawkins, Russia, and an unnamed third location.

What Are the Stranger Things Season 4 Episode Names?
