A high refresh rate screen, binned processors, copper vapor chambers, and in-your-face “gamer” aesthetics were some of the unique characteristics that were introduced with the release of the Razer Phone in 2017, which is credited with launching the “gaming phone” market. In addition, the Razer Phone was equipped with a high refresh rate screen. However, in the years that have passed since then, many of those “gaming” capabilities have made their way down to standard phones produced by firms such as Samsung, OnePlus, and many more. Do not be deceived: despite the fact that some of their features have been adopted by the general public, fire-breathing enthusiast devices like the new Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate continue to innovate and offer experiences that are one of a kind.
Here are three major features that help the Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate stand out from the mainstream crowd, as well as one function that falls well behind the others in its category.
The audio on the Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate is incredible.
Being an audio engineer by profession, I’ve always prioritized products that have a nice sound when it comes to making purchases. Unfortunately, the audio quality of the vast majority of major cell phones suffers. Rarely do mobile devices come equipped with high-quality audio components like speakers, digital-to-analog converters, or even jacks for headphones. On top of that, a lot of consumers have switched to headphones that connect via Bluetooth, and most people would rather have thin bezels than large, booming built-in speakers anyhow.
The Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate is another option to consider. It has front-facing dual speakers that will make your ears quake but at the expense of having the narrowest bezels possible. When compared to the music that comes out of other smartphone speakers, the sound that this phone produces blows my mind. And despite the fact that I own a large number of pairs of headphones, there are occasions when I do not want to put anything in or on my ears.
No matter if you’re gaming or viewing movies, the ROG Phone’s speakers produce a full-bodied sound and are expertly tuned, making it an ideal device for music enthusiasts like us. Even better, the ROG Phone steadfastly clings to the time-honored 3.5mm headphone socket, and if you purchase the optional AeroActive Cooler 7 accessory, you will receive an additional headphone jack that can be utilized while the phone is held in landscape orientation.
You have complete control over it.
I don’t always want to utilize the touch screen, pair a Bluetooth controller, or strap on a gadget like the Razer Kishi while I’m engaging in intense gaming sessions. Good news! The Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate provides additional control options in such an overwhelming quantity that it makes my head hurt.
In addition to its 14 specialized control inputs accessible via touch-sensitive buttons, the phone also provides users with 10 distinct motion control possibilities. When you fasten the AeroActive Cooler 7 to your back, you will discover that it has four genuine buttons running along its length.

When playing games such as Call of Duty: Mobile or Fortnite, having those additional inputs at your disposal might make all the difference in the world. Instead of relying just on touchscreen controls, gamers can take advantage of the many features offered by gaming phones, which give them a distinct advantage over other ways. Some games do not accept controllers at all, while others restrict their use of certain activities.
Take, for instance, a run-of-the-mill match of Call of Duty: Mobile. I have four distinct button presses mapped out for reloading, crouching, looking down the sights, and shooting the weapon. My thumbs are now free to concentrate on manipulating my character and targeting the screen as a result of this. If I didn’t have those other inputs, I’d have to pause my movement with one of my thumbs in order to push a button and perform an action like firing, which would make me a lot easier target. Even if I don’t make use of all of the options that are accessible to me, it’s great to have them available in the first place because it enables me to create highly customized configurations.
The Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate is so very cold that even polar bears would be afraid to touch it.
The vast majority of today’s flagship smartphones are, without a doubt, more than capable of running the newest games; nevertheless, from a thermal management aspect, they are not designed to be optimal for doing so. Maintaining a cool operating temperature for that monstrous Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU is absolutely necessary in order to achieve optimal performance when gaming.

Asus places a high priority on performance with the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate by continuing to innovate its cooling system and doing things like positioning the components of the phone that generate the most heat in the device’s center. This distributes heat throughout the entire phone, allowing for more even cooling, and it also maximizes the cooling potential (and, consequently, performance) of the smartphone when the AeroActive Cooler 7 is attached to the rear of the case.
This cooler has been modified to include a Peltier cooler, in addition to an AeroActive Portal, which contributes even more to the reduction of internal heat. In comparison to its predecessors, the AeroActive Cooler 7 is now a practical accessory thanks to the incorporation of a Peltier cooler, which enables it to use active cooling to remove heat from the rear of the phone. When the Cooler is installed, the AeroActive Portal, which is exclusive to the Ultimate model and opens automatically, enables more direct airflow to be sent to the components that are running the hottest. (It is also really entertaining to see open.)
New designs have been implemented around the vapor chamber and graphite sheets to improve the cooling solutions found on the interior of the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate itself. Despite the fact that advancements with catchy titles like “Liquid Return channels” and “Wick Column Structures” are honestly above my level of comprehension, I have observed that this phone maintains its cool temperature even after extended periods of use for gaming purposes. I am certain that I can put a lot of strain on this phone, and that it will maintain its level of performance regardless of how long I play. In addition, I am aware that there is no need for me to be concerned about my hands becoming hot and clammy as a result of holding a hot slab for an hour. The same cannot be true for each and every flagship smartphone now available on the market.
However, the camera quality isn’t very good.
Could the formidable Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate actually have a weak spot, given all the things that make it such a fantastic device? The camera is the one significant drawback of this phone that would prevent me from using it on a daily basis and it’s unfortunate that it has this drawback.
I am a professional photographer as well as a film producer, and I just cannot rely on this camera system to take photographs or videos the way I would like them to. The hardware of the camera is more than capable of meeting my expectations; however, the processing of the camera is not up to par, and simply cannot keep up with them. The images taken with the ROG Phone 7 suffer from issues such as poor white balance readings, excessively processed HDR, and excessive degrees of sharpness, all of which make the photos appear artificial and unnatural in comparison to real life.
To be fair, the camera quality of ROG Phones has significantly advanced over the course of their product range. It’s not a terrible camera by any means; nevertheless, compared to the other flagship smartphones in its price bracket, it pales in comparison and stands out as a glaring shortcoming in the midst of an abundance of positive qualities. It’s a bummer for me, and I really hope Asus can continue to make improvements to the camera performance of their phones, but of course, that all depends on how much you personally care about the camera performance of your phone.
In spite of the poor performance of the camera, this phone is an absolute monster in every other respect. Because it has features that are ahead of their time, the Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate stands out from the competition. This is the most important point. These kinds of fully loaded, enthusiast-level gaming phones help move the entire mobile ecosystem ahead, and I couldn’t be happier that companies like Asus are continuing to develop in this sector. If gaming phones hadn’t been the ones to pave the route initially, it’s possible that mainstream phones wouldn’t have been as quick to adopt technologies like vapor chambers and high refresh rate screens.
