The final day of “Overwatch 1” is today

Final Day of Overwatch 1

Close enough for government work, I hope. At the time of this writing, Blizzard has 32 hours left before launching Overwatch 2, at which point they will shut down the Overwatch 1 servers. Yet, I don’t want to get too sentimental about the game just yet. For better or worse, today is your last full day of Overwatch 1. (The servers will be turned off on October 3 at 12:00 PM Eastern.)

Teams of six players are competing against one another for the final time in Overwatch. This is your last chance to form a tank duo. The last day of competitive, quick play, and arcade play on Assault/2CP maps. Day five of the double-shield meta is over. These next few days are your final chance to get in some Orisa, Doomfist, and Bastion time before the games undergo major overhauls.

It’s also the final day to acquire loot boxes and spend Overwatch Credits on seasonal Legendary skins. I won’t repeat my complaints about Overwatch 2’s monetization right now (you can read more about it here), but now looks like a decent moment to unlock that Overwatch League skin or seasonal Legendary you’ve been eyeing.

Overwatch 2 is an interesting progression of the first game in many respects, but it’s too soon for a full review. Even more exciting things lie in store (trust me on that one). It’s sad to see the original version of a game I love to leave, even if it’s for the best. If you happen to run into me today in Mystery Heroes, please say hello.

In the meanwhile, those who own Overwatch 1 or the Overwatch 2 Watchpoint Pack will be able to pre-install the sequel in advance of its October 4, 3 PM ET release. When the servers go live, new players can join. Here you may learn about the pre-download process for Overwatch 2 and how to link a mobile phone number to your account.
